Drama

All children at Our Lady's get an opportunity to participate in some form of drama.

The youngest children benefit from participating in role play situations, in the “home corner”, alongside classroom re-enactments of familiar stories, sometimes using props or puppets as an aid.

During Literacy lessons drama plays an important role which helps the children to see how a character would react or feel in an imaginary world. Children are encouraged to “hot seat” characters, where they pretend to be that character and answer questions in a manner befitting to that character. This helps them to extend already familiar stories or rewrite stories in their own words.

In addition, children read and learn poetry, which they can then perform to others. This encourages clear diction, good timing and the skill to be able to work alongside others.

Drama plays a large part in our class assemblies, with each child taking on a role in a sketch or story, to help illustrate a moral or religious point.

Other examples of drama in the curriculum are more obvious, with Christmas Nativities and end of year productions, involving singing, dancing and acting.

The children are also able to appreciate the talents of others, by watching professional performances, in school and at the theatre. These are often followed by the chance for the children to put these newly found skills into practise, with workshops and mini performances.

This use of drama in the curriculum strengthens each child's confidence and provides them with a time to shine in a different arena, be it dance, acting, singing, playing a musical instrument or humour.
