Pre-preparatory (Infants)

Our primary aim in pre-prep is to build upon the skills acquired in Reception. Specifically, being able to write, putting their ideas down on paper and being able to recognise numbers, order them, add and subtract.

There is increased emphasis on independent learning, working on tasks on their own as well as within a group. Improving speaking and listening skills and general increased levels of concentration.

Each child is encouraged to express themselves in artwork, music, drama and movement.

We actively encourage a love of books, reading and listening. Children can choose from the many books displayed in the class book corner and sit in a comfortable chair or on floor cushions and beanbags.

A typical day in the infant classroom would start with the form teacher either reading from a big book or writing something to emphasise a phoneme (the sound a letter makes). Then the children may work in pairs or small groups on a shared literacy activity, then they may be asked to work individually, on a piece of writing or reading. After a snack and a run around outside the children would go back to their class teacher for some maths activities. They may start with number rhymes, simple addition and subtraction sums or a number problem to solve together.

Then they may work on consolidating that information in a work book, or with a practical maths activity.

The children all gather together to eat lunch in the school hall. Followed by a time to play outside in the school grounds.

Afternoons are filled with a variety of lessons and activities; including geography, history, art, music and movement, visits to the ICT suite for simple computer work, circle time, P.E. and R.E.

And to round off a typical day, story time, with the class sat together on the carpet, all listening and enjoying a shared literary moment.
