Reception
Children at Our Lady’s can enter reception in the September after their fourth birthday.
The Reception Class is full time education, term time only, with the advantage of being able to purchase early bird, after school and holiday care on a flexible basis.
Reception children wear full school uniform and their regular school day begins at 8.45am and ends at 3.45pm.
In terms of their education, the pupils in the Reception class follow the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum. There is a full time Qualified Reception Teacher who liaises closely with both the Nursery Staff and the rest of the Teachers. The close relationship between Pre Prep and Reception aids the easy transition to full time school.
A normal day in the Reception Class starts with Circle Time for register, followed by time to show and tell. Each child is encouraged to listen to others as well as increase their conversational skills and ask or answer relevant questions.
Time is spent on mental mathematic games and then followed by maths activities such as card games, worksheets or problem solving.
After a snack and break-time outside, the class return to the classroom for a story and some literacy based work. This may be handwriting, phonics work or reading. Again these activities will take on a practical emphasis.
At lunchtime the children eat together in the hall and then play outside for a while.
After their playtime they benefit from a variety of activities. These include pottery, music, drama, history, geography, science, French, Spanish and ICT.
Each day ends with a story and a chance to reflect on what they have learnt throughout the day.
